Happy New Year to you all – I hope you had a great time with family and friends over the holiday season. Ready for a new B&W Challenge?? Well, this time I thought we could concentrate on geometric shapes, circles and round shapes to be precise. In order to really bring out shapes in photography it is sometimes necessary to remove all distractions, which includes colour (there are of course exceptions!). For my photos I have resulted to looking around my home to see what circular/round objects I have that would lend themselves to this challenge (as it was -35C for the past week I really did not feel like venturing out that much!). As you can see, they are all very mundane items, so even if you don’t find anything outside, you should be able to raid the kitchen for some things to photograph for this.    All images were processed in LR using a basic B&W conversion preset I have and then making individual adjustments as I saw fit. As always, I would love to hear how you converted your photos into monochrome and/or your background story as to how you came to choose the subject in your shot. Get creative with the shape, the viewpoint, lighting and your conversion! I look forward to seeing your shots! |

We are experiencing what meteorologists have termed a "bomb cyclone". So I thought it would be a good day to start taking down Christmas decorations. However, after seeing your challenge Simone I couldn't just pack things away without a few pictures first. A slight variation on round.....    |

Thanks for getting us off to a great start Helen!
I really like the bokeh in the second photo, the B&W conversion also brings out the texture of the top roll of ribbon, which is very nice.

Helen, I don't see an issue with your subjects, they all have some round/circular elements to them!

Looks like a great idea and top challenge Simone. I will have a look around the unit later today and see what kind of things I can find that would be applicable to the challenge. Love your images by the way. Helen, yours are superb as well and in keeping with the challenge. Hmmm, now what can I find?

This is a shot I just took and worked on in Silver Efex Pro. I experimented with a few round objects I found lying around, but I liked this one the best. I focused into the wine glass lying on its side and was hoping to get a bit more depth of field between it and the glass lying on top of it. I used the film noir 2 preset, but tweaked the levels and curves slightly to give it a bit more contrast. Tomorrow I will see if I can find some other round objects that I can experiment with and do another one.  |

Very nice photos everyone and this looks like a fun challenge. I am tempted to just re-post a black and white version of my photo of the moon in another thread, but that would be just simply cheating  So I'll have a look around and see if I can find anything suitable to play with. Hi Sydney, regarding your comment just a couple of quick tips in case you are not aware. Firstly, if you used auto-focus your camera might have actually focused on something opaque in the background behind the clear glass and not on the glass itself. Maybe try manual focus if you didn't use it to focus the glass. Secondly, among other things, depth of field is controlled by the size of your aperture. The smaller the aperture, the larger the DOF. Perhaps try setting a smaller aperture while at the same time setting a longer shutter speed to maintain a constant exposure and see if that gives you the DOF you would like to see. But remember to check your shutter speed to ensure it doesn't get too slow for hand holding the camera if not on a tripod. Anyway, just some food for thought  |

Sydney, great image - I like the set up and look forward to seeing your other attempt.
Bob, that is a great entry! I wonder if increasing the exposure of the sphere would give more detail, as the overall image is a little dark and I feel the detail is a little lost.

Rita, that is a very interesting looking photo. The background with it's round swirl elements mimics the bowl really well and ties it together. You would think that a busy background would distract, but here I think it adds something.

Thank you, Simone. Shots against plain backgrounds, light and dark, were pretty boring. I needed something to look at through the glass, which actually made it more "glassy". The swirls are the design of two sofa cushions I used to prop up the bowl, and I liked that its weight indented the cushion a little in the front.
