Many thanks to all. Now I understand, both layers the same. As I was afraid of, the culprit is me. Brain fade. I will blame it on age. This is a fine forum.

Hi hillbilly,
The first "culprit" that comes to mind is the Blend Mode of the Brush tool. Check if it has changed. You want it to be the Normal mode.
The brush tool blend mode is in Normal mode. The layer mask shows the paint strokes, but the associated layer doesn't. I hope there is another easy "culprit" Think it is probably me. Hillbilly

Trying to modify the background (for example) I open a photo, CtrlJ to create a duplicate layer, create a layer mask (white for instance) select paint brush, choose black, choose opacity, and paint. The layer mask shows where I've painted, but layer 1 shows nothing. If I disable visibility on the original layer, layer one shows transparency in various degrees where I've painted. So it seems to me that the layer mask is working but not showing any actions on layer 1 for some reason.
Layer masks were working a week or two ago so its probably something I did in what my grand kids kindly call brain fade. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I believe we can mark this one solved. The Adobe document tells how to update the GPU driver. If that doesn't work (my computer won't support the update) it tells how to force the filters to open in safe mode. Followed directions and can now use NIK filters. Looks like its time for me a new computer. Thank you very much. Your efforts to solve my and all these other folks problems are highly appreciated.

I got the NIK collection downloaded thru another site. Unfortunately I am still unable to use any of the filters except sharpening and define. A dialog box comes up:"Photoshop Elements 14 Editor has stopped working.Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available" No notification appears. Maybe I need to uninstall and reinstall Photoshop elements. I have the disc somewhere. No email in the Junk folder. Hillbilly.

Well, so far I haven't gotten anything. I have tried a couple of different approaches, but wind up on the same page. Clock "download" but nothing happens. I have submitted my e mail address for notifications on their page with no result. Bet I am doing something wrong. Going to see if my comuter/smart phone savvy granddaughter will come over. Again, thank you. When I get this new download will post back with results.

Sepiana, I am very embarrassed. The little triangle did it. I knew about that and had brain fade, or, as my granddaughters say "senior moment". As to the NIK collection, I have spent most of the afternoon trying to download the collection with no success. It may be computer problems. When I get it downloaded I will post back, problem solved or not. Many thanks.

When I try to apply changes from any of the filters from the NIK collection except Sharpening or Define a dialog box appears saying a problem with PSE has caused the program to shut down. It seems to make no difference what has been done or not done to the image before opening it in NIK. No problem with either sharpening or noise reduction. Don't remember changing anything in PSE or on the computer. I don't know if its related to this problem or not, but I also found that I am unable to open any action. The cursor turns to a circle with a line thru it. Thanks for any insight or help. This is a great forum.

I have PSE 14 and 11 along with elements+ and the NIK collection. This on an old HP computer, relatively cheap Dell monitor, and a HP all in one printer that is not used for prints. We also have two laptops, but don't have any editing programs on either. Get prints from wally world, but am going to try a commercial lab one day just to see if there is a difference. I was pretty disappointed with PSE2018, just don't think what is new is worth the price, plus I have read some not so glowing reports on the new stuff. Bill

Thank you. How do I navigate to that file. I am at least half computer illiterate. I have managed to set folder options to show hidden files. Sorry for the delay, new baby great grandson.
