Somewhere to sit and admire the stunning view from Tent Hill, where supposedly the Norman or Saxon armies camped before the Battle of Hastings in 1066. i.ibb.co/4jSFnjC/Matt-1.jpgBrenda

I came upon this bench on a footpath somewhere way out in the countryside and wondered whose memory it memorialised....... i.ibb.co/g3sRVnJ/Bench.jpgCouldn't help smiling when I read the dedication. A quirky and mischievous take on a solemn subject. i.ibb.co/9b9qKNW/B-CU.jpgBrenda

Here's a different slant on this week's theme: how many steps does it take to walk 31 miles? That's the challenge that many runners/walkers were facing yesterday. I encountered them in droves as I toiled my own solitary way along the South Downs for just 13 miles and a bit. Rather them than me! i.ibb.co/MGhYV1d/3.jpgBrenda

I was sitting lost in thought on the bus yesterday when I suddenly realised that I was unexpectedly gazing at this week's theme, the mini staircase for those travellers who prefer the upper deck. i.ibb.co/XLjGpqF/1.jpgThese old stone steps are a nice feature in the churchyard of Clayton church, at the foot of the South Downs in Sussex. i.ibb.co/Rcm8rsS/2.jpgBrenda

These old steps descend a steep alleyway between houses in Woolwich, Nice. Would you know the age of those steps? Hm, can't say for sure and couldn't find anything online, but I would think they date from the late nineteenth, early twentieth century, when housing was extensively developed in this area. The steps themselves are solid blocks of stone, granite at a guess. Nowadays they would be cement, less durable but easily repaired or replaced. Sorry can't be more precise.

Who remembers the ritual of the old Mercury Thermometer? Shake vigorously to move the mercury near the bulb, position under the tongue or under the arm and leave for two minutes, squint at the reading, then clean and store carefully. So much easier now that we just point a gun at the forehead or place a nozzle in the ear for two seconds.... i.ibb.co/P6Yyjdw/Tem.jpgBrenda

"Like bees around a honeypot" - Easter Bank Holiday crowds always flock to Oxleas Meadow in south east London, attracted by the nearby car park, the cafeteria and the views. i.ibb.co/f0ywZD7/BE.jpgJust a few hundred yards away, you can be "Far from the Madding Crowds" on Eaglesfield Green. i.ibb.co/BNvgxxX/AFMC.jpgBrenda
