A wonderful story. I’m so glad it got recorded. When we moved up to the country from New York the doctors themselves still made house calls. Now due to Covid a visiting nurse comes to check on me every few months. And Vicki’s memories are so interesting.. I date back to the outhouse days too, But even so, I’ve always loved the country best, even with it’s drawbacks. Appalachia must be a wonderful place to live, even in spite of the poverty. Thanks BuckSkin.

Amazing! Thank you Helen for all those fascinating pictures. What a fun day it must have been for you. That man must be so interesting. Hope you get to see his Christmas display.
There was a place near here where you tune in your car radio to a Christmas music channel and drive through his beautiful display never having to leave your car.
Pep usually takes me for a drive for Halloween and again at Christmas but I never saw anything like this.
Thanks again.
Happy Halloween.

Did you ever see a Guard Donkey? L
Thanks Berengaria, what an interesting topic.
It is a very common thing around here to put a Donkey in with cattle with the idea that the Donkey will chase off or kill stray dogs and Coyotes; probably half the cattle farmers around here have a Donkey in with their herd.
Now, whether they are of any real benefit is a point that as yet has not been proven to me.
The cute factor aside, Donkeys are dangerous animals with very large and powerful jaws; one of our local legendary horse and mule traders actually lost an arm due to a Donkey biting it off; the Donkey carried him across the barn lot by what was left of his arm before he could get away.
If he doesn't bite off a limb, he will, with no warning, kick you into the middle of next week.
I have known of Donkeys actually killing young calves which sort of negates any protection they may provide against other predators.
It is exceedingly rare for a Coyote to kill something as big as a calf; they will, however, hang around until a calf is born and run off with the afterbirth, providing the momma cow doesn't grind them into the ground first.
What will kill calves is a pack of neighborhood dogs, household pets that have never been taught any sense; you go and tell their owners of their mischief and the owners are all "not my precious ____; he would never do anything like that"; and, on his next offense, you hear the crack of a rifle and he don't make it in for supper that night; you get eight or ten neighborhood pets together and they will kill more calves than Blackleg.
THIS and THIS is definitely why you do not want your neighbor, or anyone else within a half-mile, to get a Donkey; they will do this about a hundred times a day, all hours of the day and night, usually much louder than it sounds on these videos, a sound as if all the devils in hell were in mortal anguish.
I know a guy whose ringtone is a Donkey braying; if he gets a call while in Megalowmart, it gets everyone in the store's attention.

Not sure how to do this but I’ll give it a try. This is for Buckskin. Did you ever see a Guard Donkey? I doubt if they would ever chase a fox or coyote but maybe a dog. He’s as cute as can be. The sheep were running over the hillside in a long line and he kept right up behind them. This was in Dutchess Co., NY.

Hope you enjoy it. I have a terrible time finding a good book that I like. I’ve read all the ones I like at least 3 times. So much trash out there. Thank heaven for free libraries!

BuckSkin, many thanks for your great research. It is very interesting. I can easily imagine you heading up into the Kentuck mountains this Fall and trying to find some of those old mountain houses around Troublesome Creek to photograph, if they haven't all washed away.
Of course full credit has to go to Kim Richardson and her great book, "The Book Women of Troublesome Creek". She did a fabulous job.
(Funny but I always like books about libraries, library people, even library cats. Never go wrong with a library theme. That's how I picked this out. }

Buckskin, I thought about you when I read this and wondered if you were familiar with it. It was one of the best books I ever read. Are there still any blue people living?
