Thank you, supiana,
1. I think the panels being independent of the PSE 8 workspace only happened after I erased the internal HD and began the laborious task in reinstalling OS X Yosemite and all non Apple software (registering each as necessary). When I attempted to install PSE 8 from the supplied disk, a window appeared stating I could no longer install from that disk as it was no longer valid (or something to that effect). I had to download from online, then (re)register. Before the erasure/reinstall, the panels were locked to the right hand side of the workspace so that when I minimised the workspace, the attached panels were also minimised.
2. The problem only happened after the erasure/reinstall. The problem was not there before that.
3. I don't know if the problem occurs in PSE 11 as I use PSE 8 as PSE 11 has some illogical limitations on image manipulation techniques. From memory, an example of this 'reduced' capability would be when an object on a transparent layer is being 'free transformed'. The scroll wheel will not zoom in or out until the transform is performed or cancelled. If the transformation is not satisfactory or incomplete, I need to zoom the window and then reenter the "Free Transform" menu again. PSE 8 does not behave in this frustrating manner.
4. I don't know where the Preference file is located.
5. I carried out "Repair Disk Permissions" but the problem persists.
Gratefully, ranger1.
P.S. Thought I had posted this reply yesterday (23 May) but as I couldn't see it listed in this dialogue, I've posted it today.

Hello cats4jan, I apologise for my lack of response to your kind reply of 19 October 2016. I experience protracted difficulties with my iMac around that time, necessitating erasure of internal HD, reinstallation of OS X and all other software suites and, of course, loss of all Mailbox and Safari bookmark data. I must have appeared quite rude when your generous assistance elicited no response from me. Again, I apologise. I have raised the same issue again yesterday with 'Sepiana' replying. I answered her raised questions and the illustrate the differences between the Layers palette in PSE 11 (as you kindly attached to your 2016 response) and the PSE 8 Layer Palette can be shown in the attached file. Thanking you belatedly for your generous advice, I remain Yours sincerely, ranger1.

Hello Sepiana (and very belatedly Janice), Answer 1, yes it is the same problem set out at the link < www.photoshopelementsandmore.com/thread/2928/locking-pse-8-palettes-position>. When I clicked the link just now, I discovered a detailed response from Janice 'cats4jan', displaying the layer palette options at the bottom of the PSE 11. These PSE11 options include a "More" option in the right hand corner. As the attached file "2017-05-15 PSE 8 LayerPaletteOptions" will show, the PSE 8 Layer options at bottom are - Create a new layer Create new fill or adjustment layer the third symbol from left (a chain link ?) is inactive - then text ..."Lock:" a transparency sample window then a symbol of a closed lock the fourth symbol is a Trash Can at extreme right is a resize palette triangular symbol. There is no "More" button in the PSE 8 version. Answer 2, I didn't know you had replied (thank you) and so haven't tried any of your suggestions. Sorry. I hope I have answered your thoughts. Sincerely, ranger1. P.S. By way of explanation of my inactivity and response with gratitude, for a protracted period around that time, I was forced to reformat my internal HD, reinstall OS X and all other software suites. All Mail and Safari settings were lost making computing life most frustrating for a very long time. I am most appreciative of your generous efforts to respond to my questions and I apologise for what must have seemed quite rude behaviour (or lack of response) on my part.

Hello all,
I am running OS X 10.10 Yosemite on an iMac 21.5" with 4GB ram.
I have PSE 8 and PSE 11 installed and find PSE 8 easier to use. Can anyone advise me how to lock Panels (Effects, Layers, Color Swatches) to the workspace, please? When I minimise the workspace into the dock on the left side of desktop, the Panels remain in their position with the workspace no longer behind them and need to be minimised separately.
I am grateful for any advice you may have. Thank you.
Faithfully, ranger1.
