... mrkrnbrd ... that works as well. I did a quick screen snip and think you might be able to crop from upper right down toward the giraffes' shoulders. ... Mark, to be honest, on first look I wasn't sure if the crop worked. However, coming back to it what I do think works, is how the square emphasizes the diagonal formed by the long necks of the giraffes as they eat the leaves. I agree it is the diagonal that works well with this image - thanks Helen and Clive

How about these long tall animals I had to cut them off at the knees but it still looks OK I think.

Lots of great images to choose from this week and I shortlisted three that are similar to images I have taken but are a million times better due to the artistry of the photographer. taco40 took a great picture of a Canada? goose with a great blurred background the colour of which suggests the colour of the bird itself. The expression on the bird is brilliantly menacing and a great title made me smile: ‘I have but one weapon with which to defend my lady.’ fotofrank ‘Dahlia’ is a beautiful close up of a beautiful flower, the complementary colours make this image pop and the focussing and detail captured is stunning. pontiac1940 ‘Kestrel. Near Cowley, Alberta. Aug 19, 2018.’ Now I am a sucker for Birds of Prey and I love Kestrels, we have lots in the UK and you normally identify them hovering over local fields. This picture could be straight from a Bird of Prey photography workshop but I believe it is a wild male bird that has got something in its talons. It is my Image of the Week - Well done Clive. Thanks for all the submissions this week and thanks to hmca Helen for organising IOW.

There were 20 images to choose from this week and every one of them was great, I had such a hard time just shortlisting them and discarding some such as the light/dark flamingo, land trust bridge, old stone barn and the lil fisherman was very hard. My runners up for image of the week are ‘untitled’ by Andy The canvas texture is used to great effect and I love the green foliage providing a natural frame to this beautiful train, ‘Among the leaves so green’ by dandc Perfect Effects is a brilliant program and all your pictures are super Dan (I would have championed your ‘female red-tailed hawk’ but it wasn’t in my week!!) and ‘Once Upon a Time - This Was Someone's Home’ by Sepiana - I love the framing merging into the wispy cobwebby trees that suit the image subject so well. My image of the week is ‘Lilacs’ by blackmutt – Simply beautiful, the colour of the flowers are shown off so well by the black background and the side lighting from the left. The soft focus effect is just right. Who said still life was boring! Thanks everyone for excellent images to judge and thanks to Helen hmca for organising image of the week every week. Mark

I'll come straight out with the winner first: My Image of the week is Safety Harbor by kathylee - The more you look at this image the more you see from the city on the skyline to the three different birds in the picture My runners up this week were Lone Cypress by Sepiana This picture seems to have an Eighties film look about it I like how the sky colour complements the Cypress tree and Horizon by Sydney I love the textures and painted look this picture has and it is perfectly framed. Some lovely Autumn images this week I liked 'A Rainy Day' by kathylee , 'Autumn' by dennis9 and 'Late in the Afternoon' by Sepiana . I loved the use of texture to match the image on 'Ross Errilly Friary' by Andy it was very nearly my IOW but was pipped at the post at the last minute by hmca . Helen's windows were great and my favourite of the two and therefore our Image of the Week is 'Window 2' The buildings grey wood frame matches the reflection and it is a great shot and very clever if it is straight out of the camera (if it is PSE warping I am equally impressed!!) It even has some Autumn colour. - I love it.

Firstly and most importantly thanks to hmca for organising Image of the Week and thank you to everyone who posted such a variety of great pictures for me to look at and attempt to judge. My runners up are the two beautiful yellow flower images submitted by Yvonne and dandc and the cow from drjoerogers What can I say about these three images except that I am a sucker for Nature! All three Images share some great photography techniques namely brilliant cropping and excellent contrast for largely monochromatic images -Well done they all stand out and are works of art. Natures Beauty, Simple Beauty and Just Another Pretty Face ( Sometimes I feel just like another number.) My Image of the Week for this week is Glass with Water by fotofrank Orange and Blue together are cheerful and harmonious and create eye-catching contrast because they are one of the three complementary colour pairs i.e. colours opposite each other on the colour wheel (the other complementary pairs are are red and green; purple and yellow) This is a brilliant Image and I love it

Rose Josephine Bruce taken last night in the rain in my garden macro lit with flash only. I am very pleased this came out as I visualised it, this rose is very difficult to photograph to get the deep colour right. Rose Josephine Bruce by Mark Rainbird, on Flickr
